If you can’t read and write Hiragana, you won’t be able to learn from over 85% of textbooks and learning materials. Because 85% of learning materials don’t have romaji support.
The remaining 15% of learning materials with romaji are for absolute beginners only. So you won’t be able to move beyond the beginner level until you get the Hiragana skill.
If you are thinking about learning Japanese seriously, you do need Hiragana to keep progressing to higher level.
